Utilities Lead Quarterly Dilution as Materials Buybacks Gain
Aggregate share counts rose across Utilities, Energy, and Healthcare while Materials and Retail saw net reductions.

Utilities experienced the sharpest increase in share counts this quarter, with aggregate shares rising 3.37% to 14.92 billion. PG&E Corp (PCG) drove much of this trend, adding 477.7 million shares, a 21.69% increase. While 35 companies in the sector saw dilution, NRG Energy, Inc. (NRG) reduced its count by 1.8 million shares.
Energy and Healthcare & Pharma also saw net dilution, though at a more moderate pace. (KOS) adding 112.2 million shares. Healthcare & Pharma saw 291 companies increase share counts, resulting in a net increase of 274.0 million shares. Prelude Therapeutics Inc (PRLD) added 16.6 million shares, a 26.42% increase.
Materials & Chemicals moved in the opposite direction, recording a net reduction of 94.2 million shares. International Paper Co (IP) led the sector's buybacks, reducing its share count by 97.5 million shares, or 15.55%. This offset dilution from smaller issuers like UR-Energy Inc (URG), which added 19.2 million shares.
Retail & Consumer followed a similar pattern of net reduction, with aggregate shares falling 0.35% to 31.69 billion. Copart Inc (CPRT) reduced its count by 37.5 million shares. Bed Bath & Beyond, Inc. (BBBY) stood out as a top dilutor in the group, adding 4.6 million shares.
Food, Beverage & Tobacco saw a modest net increase of 47.0 million shares. Beyond Meat, Inc. (BYND) added 52.1 million shares, an 11.26% increase. Post Holdings, Inc. (POST) countered this trend by reducing its share count by 2.6 million shares.
