EPA Redesignates Canton Area to Attainment for 2008 Lead Standard
The Environmental Protection Agency has approved Ohio's plan to move the Canton area from nonattainment to attainment status for lead air quality standards.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has redesignated the Canton Nonattainment Area to attainment of the 2008 Lead (Pb) National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS). This action follows the EPA's approval of an attainment plan and a comprehensive emissions inventory submitted by the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency on September 19, 2024.
As part of the redesignation, the EPA determined that the Canton area has successfully attained the 2008 Pb NAAQS. To ensure the region remains compliant, the EPA also approved a maintenance plan submitted by Ohio on April 25, 2025.
The decision aligns with the Clean Air Act and existing implementation regulations. The EPA previously proposed these changes on March 27, 2026, and received no adverse comments following the public notice period.
This final rule is effective July 16, 2026.
